<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1: Use the right tools &#8211; it really matters</h3>



<p>If you’ve ever tried to cut corners with a cheap brush or low-quality painter’s tape, you already know how frustrating the results can be. High-quality tools may cost a little more upfront, but they’ll save you time and ensure a better finish.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Brushes: </strong>Use an angled sash brush (2.5–3&#8243;) for trim and corners. For large areas, microfiber or woven rollers reduce splatter and help achieve smooth, even coverage.</li>



<li><strong>Tape: </strong>Avoid general household tape. Instead, opt for a premium painter’s tape. Apply it firmly and remove it while the paint is still slightly wet to avoid peeling.</li>



<li><strong>Other essentials: </strong>Invest in a paint tray with liners, an extension pole for ceiling work, and a drop cloth to protect your furniture and flooring.</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2: Save time with overnight storage hacks</h3>



<p>Painting a room often takes more than a day, and constant washing between coats or sessions can feel like a chore. Here&#8217;s how to pause your project without ruining your tools:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Brushes &amp; rollers:</strong> Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, then place them in a sealed plastic bag. Store them in the fridge overnight, or for up to 2 days.</li>



<li><strong>Paint tray: </strong>Cover the entire tray with cling film or place it inside a large plastic bag and seal it. This saves both time and water.</li>
</ul>



<p>This hack is perfect if you&#8217;re waiting for coats to dry or taking a well-deserved break before finishing up the next day.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3: Know your surface before you paint</h3>



<p>Not all walls are created equal. Understanding what you&#8217;re painting helps determine the prep work and products you&#8217;ll need:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Drywall: </strong>Needs a primer before painting to seal the surface and prevent blotchiness.</li>



<li><strong>Brick or stone: </strong>These porous surfaces need masonry paint, and sometimes a specialty primer, to adhere properly and resist moisture.</li>



<li><strong>Wallpaper:</strong> In most cases, remove the wallpaper first. If this is not an option, use a high-adhesion bonding primer before painting over it.</li>



<li><strong>Wood paneling:</strong> Sand glossy surfaces, fill cracks with wood filler, and apply a stain-blocking primer before painting.</li>



<li><strong>Textured walls:</strong> Use a thicker roller nap (3/4&#8243; or higher) to cover grooves and crevices.</li>
</ul>



<p>Proper surface prep ensures the paint bonds correctly and looks good long-term.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4: Always do a test patch</h3>



<p>Paint swatches on paper or in the store won&#8217;t show you how the colour reacts in your actual space. Light, time of day, and surrounding decor all affect how a colour appears.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Apply 2–3 colour samples directly to your wall. Paint at least a 12&#8243;x12&#8243; section for each colour.</li>



<li>Check the samples in daylight and evening light. A soft grey might look purple under warm lighting, while a beige might turn yellow in full sun.</li>



<li>Observe how the colour changes next to trim, furniture, and flooring. It may clash in ways you didn’t expect.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7: Cut in first, then roll</h3>



<p>&#8216;Cutting in&#8217; is the process of painting around edges, where the wall meets the ceiling, or trim. This is done by using a brush before you start rolling.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Why it matters:</strong> Cutting in first creates a border so your roller doesn’t have to get too close to the edges (where mistakes often happen).</li>



<li><strong>Technique tip: </strong>Use a steady hand and a good quality angled brush. Don’t overload the brush with paint. Feather the edges to blend with the roller strokes.</li>
</ul>



<p>Taking the time to cut in properly will result in a cleaner, more professional finish.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8: Keep the air moving and paint fumes out</h3>



<p>Good ventilation is essential for both safety and finish quality.</p>

<li>Open windows and use fans to speed up drying and remove fumes.</li>



<li>If you’re painting in a basement or closed room, consider using a mask rated for paint fumes.</li>

<li>To be safe, wait 4–6 hours between coats, and let it cure for at least 24 hours before hanging art or moving furniture back into place.</li>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like many home renovations, painting your home can be an intimidating prospect — especially for someone who’s never done it before. How do I know that?</p>



<p>Because I’m one of those people.</p>



<p>It’s something we’ve considered on a few occasions, like when we purchased our first home and when we set up the nursery for our little one a few years later, but those experiences were already overwhelming (and expensive) enough.</p>



<p>Quite frankly, we didn’t want the added hassle.</p>



<p>In today’s day and age,<a href="https://get.roomvo.com/blog-post-home-decor-business-shopper-expectations-roomvo/">&nbsp;consumers are more demanding than ever before</a>. We want a quick, seamless shopping experience. And my perception of purchasing paint hasn’t always been that.</p>



<p>I’ve seen friends and family members do it, sometimes taking weeks if not months to decide on a specific colour after going through endless swatches at different stores and then taking home samples to paint on parts of their walls. And that’s just the first step.</p>



<p>Like I said, it’s an intimidating prospect.</p>



<p>That’s why I was excited to try out<a href="https://hello.roomvo.com/book-demo-paint-product-launch">&nbsp;Roomvo’s enhanced paint visualizer</a>, which allows shoppers to see what different paint colours would look like on their walls by simply uploading a photo of their space and browsing through a retailer or manufacturer’s products.</p>



<p>Here’s how I fared.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Step 1: Upload photo</strong></h3>



<p>For context, I used the Roomvo visualizer at&nbsp;<a href="https://colourspark.ca/?roomvoStartVisualizer=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ColourSpark.ca</a>. I opted to use my computer, but the process is very similar on a mobile device.</p>



<p>After hitting “Room Visualizer” on the navigation bar, the first step is to either upload a photo or select one of the demo rooms. I uploaded a photo of my bedroom that I took on my phone.</p>



<p>More than any other room in our home, this is the one we’ve been wanting to paint for a while. With the large bookshelf surrounding the bed and the view of the mountains and greenery peeking in through the window, we feel like this room has a lot of potential.</p>



<p>At the same time, the walls are rather dull. We don’t mind the existing combination of a darker and lighter grey – it’s what we have throughout our home. But it’s a fairly muted look to begin with and the colours have faded a bit over time. Not to mention: if you look closely, you’ll notice that there are a few streaks visible that were used to patch up previous imperfections.</p>



<p>In order to create more of a “wow” factor and truly unlock this room’s full potential, we felt a paint job was needed.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Select colour(s)</h3>



<p>Here’s where it gets fun.</p>



<p>After uploading my photo, I’m now able to browse through the full catalogue of Colour Spark paints that appear on the left panel and, with the click of a button, preview what they’re going to look like in my room.</p>



<p>I’ll be honest with you: we didn’t go into this with any particular colour scheme in mind. As noted above, the goal was simply to bring the room to life. We’re open to whatever colour(s) will help accomplish that.</p>



<p>As you can see, both walls are selected to begin with. So, I can either go with the same colour on both walls, or I can select one wall at a time and choose a different colour for each surface to maintain the presence of an accent wall.</p>



<p>Let’s start there.</p>



<p>At first, we were drawn to Charcoal Black and Clay Mask Green, as we like how those two colours complement each other. But using the compare feature, we can now see that Charcoal Black looks nearly identical to the colour of our existing accent wall. We’re not sure that will freshen up our look to the extent that we want, so we’re going to keep playing around.</p>



<p>The other colour that caught our eye is Stellar Navy. While we thought it looked quite sharp in tandem with some of the lighter grey tones available, again, the combination didn’t feel fresh enough for our liking, as we already have a lighter grey wall.</p>



<p>We’re still big fans of the navy, though, so we eventually decided to try it out on both walls. And right away, we felt like that was the one.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Make a decision</h3>



<p>So Stellar Navy, it is.</p>



<p>After seeing the room come to life with the same colour all around, we really like how the white bookshelf becomes the focal point of the room, rather than an accent wall. Along the same lines, the darker shade of the navy helps accentuate the bookshelf and window even further, while still adding a splash of colour to the space compared to the greys we currently have.</p>



<p>It just feels right.</p>



<p>And that’s the beauty of all of this. I can sample all the colours and combinations I want, without the limitations that come with using physical samples, to help me come to a decision I’m confident in. As someone who wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted in the first place, that’s a game-changer.</p>



<p>Initially, I was a bit worried that the visualizer would spit out something resembling a rushed Photoshop job and not provide a realistic depiction of what the room might actually look like, but that’s definitely not the case. I was impressed with the level of detail I saw, particularly how the shadows and lighting on the walls were maintained from my original photo.</p>



<p>Once again, this gives me confidence that I know exactly what I’m getting and there aren’t going to be any surprises once the paint’s up on the wall.</p>

<p>To complete the visualization process, I can now email the photo to someone or download it onto my device using the buttons on the right panel. There’s also a button that takes you to the product page, where you can find direct purchase links from the retailers that carry the paint you’re looking for.</p>



<p>Just like that!</p>



<p>So, maybe buying paint doesn’t have to be as stressful as it seemed. Not only was this a painless experience, it was also, dare I say, kind of fun.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s time for a new rug.</p>



<p>The last time we bought one was five years ago when we first moved into our new home. We have laminate floors, which, to be clear, we love. But they’re quite hard and cool underfoot. So, an area rug for the living room was an absolute must to add comfort and warmth to the space.</p>



<p>Back then, we opted for a white rug with black geometric patterns. But it’s seen better days. And now that we have a baby, a white rug (if we can still call it white at this point) is asking for trouble. So, we’re ready for a replacement.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>We figured this was a good opportunity to continue adding more colour to our home, which was previously heavy on greys and whites. In recent months, we’ve started the transformation by<a href="https://get.roomvo.com/blog-post-paint-customer-shopping-experience-room-visualizer-home-decor/"> painting the walls in our bedroom blue</a> and<a href="https://get.roomvo.com/blog-post-i-guess-i-was-wrong-how-new-technology-helped-change-my-perception-of-wallpaper/"> applying a blush wallpaper in our little one’s nursery</a>. For both of those home decor projects, we used Roomvo to help us select a product, which made for a much quicker — and far more enjoyable — shopping experience than anticipated.</p>



<p>We’re excited to do the same using the<a href="https://int.therugcompany.com/blog/post/rug-visualizer/"> Roomvo-powered rug visualizer over at The Rug Company</a>, a leading international brand for contemporary handmade rugs.</p>



<p>Here’s how I got on.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Step 1: Upload photo and explore designs</strong></h4>



<p>To start things off, I’ve uploaded a photo of my living room — sans our existing white rug — that I quickly snapped on my phone. As you can see, it’s looking pretty bare without a rug.</p>



<p>Now, I’m going to use the filter option on the left panel to ensure I’m only presented with rectangular rugs in shades of blue, red, orange, and beige, as I believe those will be the best fit for our space. Hopefully, this will help save time as I browse the product catalog.</p>



<p>There are still a lot of great options to choose from — seriously, some of these are beautiful — but I’ve narrowed my search to three particular rugs: Jude Bright, Jude Neutral, and Illusion.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Step 2: Visualize products in the home</strong></h4>



<p>This is where the fun begins.</p>



<p>With the click of a button, I can now see how each rug will look in my space. Not only that: I can also move the rugs around the room, place them underneath my furniture, rotate them, and experiment with different sizes — almost as if I were trying them out in real life.</p>



<p>Let’s have a look.</p>



<p><strong>Jude Bright</strong></p>



<p>This was one of the first rugs that caught my eye, mostly because of the colours. They’re stunning. And they match our existing colour scheme almost perfectly — from the blue and pink of the cushions and chair, to the green of forests on the wall art, to the grey of the sofa and walls. When you combine the vibrant colours with the simplicity of the design, this rug feels striking and classy at the same time.</p>



<p>At first, I previewed a larger-sized rug that covered most of the floor, but that felt a little <em>too </em>loud for my taste. Instead, I found that the 2.29m x 1.52m option, which I put in the middle of the space without touching any furniture, strikes the right balance.</p>

<p><strong>Jude Neutral</strong><strong><br></strong><strong><br></strong>Look familiar?</p>



<p>This is the same rug as above, with a more neutral palette. For this reason, the larger size doesn’t appear as overwhelming in this case. As you can see, I’ve selected a 3.66m x 2.74m rug and placed it underneath all four legs of the sofa and chair.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>We don’t have any cream tones in our space, so I wasn’t sure if this colour scheme would work. But after seeing the rug visualized, I like how it brings some <em>new </em>colours into the room, without clashing with the existing ones. The white and grey of this rug, albeit subtle, helps bring the room together. And, as it turns out, I think the cream complements our existing colours quite well.</p>



<p>It <em>definitely </em>makes the space feel warmer and cozier, if nothing else.</p>

<p><strong>Illusion<br><br></strong>Compared to the rugs above, I see this one as a nice in-between. It’s not as vibrant as Jude Bright but has more colour than Jude Neutral. Once inserted into the room, I like how the different shades of pink, blue, and grey on the rug accentuate our existing decor without overpowering it.</p>



<p>In this case, I’ve gone with a medium-sized 3.05m x 2.13m rug and placed it under the front legs of the sofa and chair, which, again, feels like a happy medium compared to the previous two options.</p>



<p>This certainly feels like a strong contender.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Step 3: Compare favourites</strong></h4>



<p>As much as I was struck by Jude Bright at first, I’m going to have to rule this one out. I still love the colours, but they were more dominant than I expected once I saw them come to life in my space. That led me to the smaller rug, but if I’m honest with myself: it just feels out of place.</p>



<p>So, it’s down to Jude Neutral and Illusion.</p>



<p>To help with my decision, I’m going to use the Compare feature, which allows me to see the rugs side-by-side and use the slider bar to go back and forth between the two options easily. Hopefully that gives me some clarity. For the purposes of the comparison, I’m going to make both rugs the same size.</p>



<p>Even though Illusion brings in more colour, one of our main goals, I can’t get over how warm and cozy the space feels with Jude Neutral. I think that’s partly due to the colour scheme. But looking into the product specifications (which I accessed by clicking on the information icon at the bottom of visualizer when in the comparison mode), I can also see that Jude Neutral is made of 100% wool, whereas Illusion is partly silk. As I understand it, wool is more durable and resistant to wear and tear, which is an important consideration for our family.</p>



<p>Seeing the two rugs side by side, you can definitely notice the difference. Illusion is thinner and has a slight sheen, while Jude Neutral appears more dense and plush.</p>



<p>Ultimately, it makes the space feel like home.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Step 4: Make a decision</strong></h4>



<p>So, Jude Neutral is the winner.</p>



<p>Ironically, it has the least amount of colour among the three rugs I considered — I mean, the word “neutral” is literally in the name. But sometimes, you don’t know what you really want until you see it.</p>



<p>That’s why room visualization has become such an important step in shopping for home decor — especially for someone like me, who prefers to do most of my shopping online when possible. We bought our first rug online, too. But in that case, we didn’t have the luxury of previewing it in our space beforehand, which made me more uncertain. In this case, I know <em>exactly </em>what I’m getting, and I feel confident knowing I’ve made the right choice for my home.</p>
